3/18/04 -- The fifth stage of the Ohio Speedskating Tour, dubbed the Miami Tournament, was held in West Chester, Ohio this past Sunday. Skatetown USA, a new facility, hosted the meet. Spectators and racers alike took advantage of the large, clean, and comfortable surroundings, which allowed much free space without crowding.
Racing was exciting but falls were common on the virtually uncoated floor. The word around the rink was that the operators are allowing the floor a six-month "breathing" period before coating it.
Jim Larson, whose Hyper booth was set up for the duration of the meet, challenged down and skated with the young guns in Senior Men. Three heats, semi finals, and -- of course -- plenty of jockeying for position made this race arguably the most exciting of the day. On the podium were champion Keith Ellsworth (Newark), silver medalist Mike Stratton (Eliminators), and bronze medalist Jim Larson (Hyper/Capitol City). Full results will be posted at the Ohio Speedskating Tour website when available, as will photos on the Starlite Roller Rink meet page.
The Miami RedHawks presented high-point team winner Marion Rockets with a commemorative banner to display at their home rink. Second place for points standings was Newark, and third was Northeast Ohio.
Approximately 170 skaters were in attendance, making for an overall decent turnout. Hopefully the final meet of the Ohio Speedkating Tour -- held in Newark, Ohio on April 18 -- will draw similar or better numbers.
